In support of its outreach efforts to the Deaf community, the Silver Spring congregation commissioned nationally known artist, Betty G. Miller, to create a design that expresses Unitarian Universalism and the beauty of Deaf culture. It takes the traditional UU chalice symbol and reinterprets it to embrace the deaf community. "This design takes the traditional UU chalice symbol and reinterprets it to embrace the deaf community. The hand is important to deaf people because of American Sign Language. In this design, the hand brings out the light which spreads outwards towards others. - Betty G. Miller, artist. |
